According to Hawaii County Civil Defense, the gusty winds can cause downed trees, power disruption and road closures without notice.
The public is warned to stay away from downed power lines and to report downed power lines to the public.
The high surf advisory is for east-facing shores from Kohala to Puna.
Hilo Bayfront Highway is closed between Pauahi Street and Waianuenue Avenue.
All beach parks remain open as of 9 a.m.
All oceanfront residents and beach-goers are advised to be alert for high and dangerous surf.
